What is Spirit?

Spirit is the immaterial, invisible substance that is the essence of all of life: energy and consciousness. Spirit constitutes the foundational building block of our universe; it is the breath we all breathe, it is the “stuff” from which life is created. The spiritual plane contains many levels or dimensions of existence that vibrate at frequencies beyond the frequencies of matter—they are immaterial and therefore not readily apparent to our physical senses. We have come to understand that the basic building blocks of matter are composed of neutrons, protons and electrons (and that those are further composed of a multitude of subatomic particles) when we previously thought that matter was solid. In the same way, we will eventually come to understand the universe as composed of many levels of vibration, most of which are not “solid” but rather “energetic” or “spiritual” in nature. Consider the electromagnetic spectrum—we know it includes both visible and invisible frequencies of light and electromagnetic radiation. The spiritual plane can be thought of as a portion of the electromagnetic spectrum that we haven’t yet been able to measure with the typically used instruments of science. However, the fact that science has not been able to objectively verify the existence of higher planes of vibration does not make them any less real. It simply means that science has a ways to go in discovering currently unchartered territory, in the same way that explorers had to sail into the unknown before they could find the new world. Even so, new scientific understandings are paving the way for science as a whole to eventually embrace the greater spiritual reality of which we are a part. It is also true that each one of us is capable of discovering the existence of the spiritual plane of reality without firsts obtaining scientific proof. Within each person lies the ability to “tune in” to the energetic reality behind all physical manifestation. By way of an example, you can imagine yourself as a cosmic radio: you can choose to “tune in” and listen to many different stations, each coming at you on a different wavelength or frequency. Spiritual development will allow you to “dial in” to the frequencies of higher consciousness: frequencies that can accelerate your growth, enhance your happiness and positively influence your future. You have the capacity to recognize and know your inner truth through the development of your natural intuitive and perceptive abilities. It is by developing and using these abilities that you will come to know the spiritual dimension of existence for yourself, without having to take anyone else’s word for it and without waiting for science to catch up. Your knowledge will not be based on any system of faith or belief; rather, it will be based on your own personal experience. That is the true power of coming to know spirit.
