Developing spiritual awareness is the key to unlocking the realms of higher consciousness and one's full potential as a human being. We are meant to live in the worlds of spirit and matter simultaneously, learning to merge spiritual knowledge with physical experience. Unfortunately, our modern world has shut down much of our capacity for spiritual awareness, leaving us with only half of the equation that we need. In order to be whole, we must reclaim the missing part of the equation: our spiritual nature. And we cannot reclaim our full selves without an understanding of what it is that we have been missing.
The missing piece of the puzzle is our natural power of perception of the higher vibrations of the spiritual realm. When we open our minds and our hearts, we are able to perceive that our world is in fact made up of energy and consciousness, even though it appears solid to our physical senses. Each one of us can learn to "tune in" to sense the innumerable energetic realities and subtle energy phenomena that surround us all the time. Spiritual practices which allow us to get back in touch with our innate ability to sense and intuit these subtle frequencies are the foundation to regaining our spiritual awareness.
We learn to tune into higher awareness through practices such as meditation, contemplation, energy work, physical disciplines such as martial arts or yoga, and intuitive development. Developing our faculties of subtle perception, or spiritual awareness, allows us to come into contact with the energetic truth and reality of a given situation. Whether we are challenged by physical illnesses or difficulties at work, in relationships or with finances, the ability to "tune" into the deeper reasons behind any situation can help us to see clearly what needs to shift in order to effect a healing or resolution. If you are having problems with anger, for example, a true resolution to the problem will require introspection. Do you harbor an underlying fear of invalidation or powerlessness or another unexamined wound? Do you find yourself unable to take risks or make changes because you are paralyzed by fears of the unknown or of moving outside your comfort zone? Once we become aware of why we do what we do, we are able to harness our power to choose anew. Our power to make conscious choices is driven by our willingness to cultivate our spiritual awareness.
Spiritual awareness is also the vehicle through which we become aware of our "higher self" or soul. This awareness allows us to exercise our powers of creation with an appreciation of the universal spiritual laws that govern our lives, and the overarching trajectory of our individual and collective evolution. Cultivating spiritual awareness is a critical step in developing our spiritual intelligence, the second pillar of spiritual growth.
