Although there are many different approaches to meditation, at its core, meditation is the practice of quieting the mind and tuning out impressions and interactions with the outside world, which allows us to focus on the impressions and interactions with our inner world and the world of spirit. The practice of meditation brings us to a higher level of consciousness and awareness, allowing us to get in touch with our “superconscious” or soul mind. Daily connection with our innate spiritual intelligence is vitally important to the growth of our spiritual understanding. In my opinion, this is the most important ingredient of living a spiritually focused life. I believe that if each one of us would be willing to tune into our inner wisdom on a regular basis, we could literally transform the world in a few generations, since it is our collective disconnection from our inner truth and the wisdom of our being that has created disconnection and suffering in the first place. Meditation can take many forms. While the classic image is that of the person sitting in the cross-legged “lotus” position, the truth is that there are many different ways to meditate. Some people enjoy meditating in nature, others while dancing, playing music or doing yoga, tai chi or other similar activities. You can meditate in silence or with sound. You can chant during your meditation, repeat a particular phrase, visualize an object or simply focus on your breath. Because each one of us is different, you need to experiment with different approaches and techniques to find what works for you. You may have heard it said that what you focus on grows. Meditation allows us to maintain an awareness of ourselves as spiritual beings having a human experience by focusing on the immaterial realm that is our true home. Meditation allows us to come into contact with our inner world, the wisdom of our bodies and the intelligence of our souls. It is the tool through which we can shift our focus from a three dimensional, physically-based reality to a multi-dimensional spiritually-based reality. From this place, we can build our lives with true knowledge, deep wisdom and the guidance and support of Spirit.
