Choosing Spiritual Wisdom

Compared to prior generations, we have an overabundance of knowledge and information available to us; unfortunately, we don’t possess more wisdom. In order for our technology to be applied correctly, we need the skills and perceptions to use it wisely. Splitting the atom does us no good when we use it to build weapons. Our ingenuity and creativity needs to be applied with love and insight, not with power and greed. True wisdom is the ability to see the benefits and pitfalls of the choices before us, and to make choices that are good not only for us as individuals, but also good for our neighbors, for the planet as a whole and for future generations. In this way, we can infuse our know-how with spiritual wisdom and the power of the heart, not just the brilliance of the mind.

Simply put, there is a more enlightened, balanced and harmonious way to live than the social, economic and political systems we have created to date. Within each one of us lies the power to intuit and understand what approaches lead to a “win-win” result and what approaches result in a “win-lose” situation where people act in ways that benefit themselves at the expense of others. When we act in less than enlightened ways, we are acting out of our own fear and ignorance. The solution always lies within us – we have the ability to use our innate wisdom and intuition to find answers to all of our individual and collective problems, and to find new and better solutions that will benefit ourselves while benefiting others as well.

I believe that most people can access the feeling of what is the “right thing” for any situation. It is the voice of the soul – it whispers to us how to act in the most loving, beneficial ways for everyone involved. It’s what I call the higher perspective. The practice of spiritual awareness allows us to become conscious of the consequences of our choices and to learn from those consequences; learning allows us to improve how we live, how we treat others and how we treat ourselves. Spiritual wisdom is, as its core, the ability to act from a place of spiritual insight, with the understanding that taking the consciously appropriate course of action creates the best outcomes for ourselves and others.
