I have spent much time thinking about the comparisons between how universal spiritual laws work in comparison with our man-made system of laws. The contrasts are fascinating and go to the heart of what is missing in our society. Our current legal system is based on the understanding that we are each separate individuals and that each one of us is presumed to act in our own individual self-interest. That self-interest often has to do with advancing our economic and social interests ahead of others or making sure we protect ourselves from others' demands. There is frequently unequal bargaining power between parties and the reality is that the party with the most money and resources is generally the one who is able to exert is control in ways that advance his or her self-interest, often at the expense of the other. Our system of dispute resolution is, in theory, designed to help judges reach a fair and balanced decision in a dispute; unfortunately, it is often difficult to get at the truth because each side has an interest in presenting its side of the story in the best light possible, even if it is not the truth or only a half-truth. Unfair legal tactics, including suppression of evidence, and unequal financial resources are not that uncommon in litigation. Many people report that even after winning a lawsuit, they often feel like they have lost because of the high financial and psychological price tag that comes with litigation. In contrast, spiritual law and divine justice operate impartially and fairly to all parties. On the spiritual level, there is no hiding the truth of any situation, or obfuscating motivations or intentions: everything is known because our level of consciousness and behaviors have a distinct energetic signature that is readily apparent. Karmic law operates regardless of whether we believe in it or whether we acknowledge its existence, and does not respect differences in strength and resources on the physical plane. Everything that we put out comes back to us, sooner or later. There is no way to cheat the karmic system. The soul will experience all of the effects of its action, both good and bad. This is the way that the soul learns and this is the path of evolution. When we understand the workings of divine law, we are motivated to think twice about our actions, intentions and behaviors. We start to appreciate that we are interconnected and that we cannot affect another without impacting ourselves. When we are in service to others, we benefit ourselves and when we hurt others, we create a karmic debt that our soul will have to repay, whether in this lifetime or a future lifetime. Knowing that spiritual law works for our ultimate benefit, we can start to use our understanding of this law to make wiser choices. We don't need man-made laws to tell us what is legal and what is not; instead, we can use our internal spiritual compass to tell us what is spiritually optimal in any situation. This is how we will make progress - it will not be through more man-made laws but through our individual and collective alignment with spiritual law.
